H&M Spring 2009: Daria by Solve Sundsbo

Some more glimpses of the new H&M by Matthew Williamson Spring 2009. Daria and Matthew Williamson "traveled all the way to Mexico to shoot what could be a studio shot, but the airtime was done for the sunlight on the Mexican beach." I'm not too fond of the idea of logging so much miles for such a campaign, but hopefully the images will change my mind. But apart from that the candids look great!

Elle Poland July 2011

Elle sure does love their reprints but its good for fans because now we have another cover for Daria this year! Elle Poland reprinted Elle Spains May 2011 cover. I have to say I like the Polish edition more for its brighter colours.

Now I don't normally do posts on reprints but seeing as how the news is sparse these days ... and also for any Polish readers out there (or for those able to get ahold of this magazine!) could you let us know if there is an interview inside or perhaps new unpublished pictures? It would be much appreciated!

Daria as Inez

A new photo is a rare sight these days. It looks like Daria's been laying low for the past month in terms of magazine apperances, and now that she's off sailing the world for the next two months I don't think we'll see much in the future! Thats why it was a treat to find this photo of Daria dressed like Inez van Lamsweerde in a photographer-muse switch.

Daria Werbowy as Inez in the "Pretty Much Everything" Exhibit
This photo was taken by Inez and Vinoodh in 2010 and will be displayed at an exhibition in Sao Paulo, Brazil ... well right about now actually! If there are any Brazilian readers out there then you should go to the exhibition - it starts in half an hour - and then you can let us know if there are any other unseen Daria pictures!

Stefanel Fall Winter 2011 2012

Daria has her first official campaign for the Fall Winter 2011/12 season! Although she didn't return as the face of Balmain after her Spring Summer '10 campaign (although models rarely do repeats for Balmain) she reprises her role as the face of Stefanel for the FW 11/12 campaign! This is her fourth consecutive and fourth overall campaign for the Italian label, so I think its safe to call Daria the Stefanel girl now!

All of the Stefanel campaigns (which you can see under the Campaigns page) have had different themes but an overlying idea of a relaxed but sophisticated cool - just like Daria. So I'm not surprised the company went for Daria again. I like the feel of this campaign already - it looks like it will be another out and about in the city idea but this time in Berlin. And you can never go wrong with dogs ... look at how cute that puppy is!

Vogue Espana June 2013 Update

Bad news for Daria fans! Looks like Daria won't be appearing on the cover of the June 2013 issue of Vogue Espana, as was expected. Anja Rubik is the coverstar this month.

Fortunately we do get a candid of Daria promoting a special edition t-shirt for this issue of Vogue Espana, so I'm guessing she is either getting just an editorial in this issue or the sneak peek was for the July cover. A cover would have been nice to see at this time so this is a little disappointing ... but it is only May! Fingers crossed for the July cover.

Daria at the Unframed Benefit

Update Looks like Daria wasn't actually supposed to attend this event! She was walking by the benefit, her friends saw her and pulled her in for a short bit. I guess we can forgive her outfit!

Daria made a rare public appearance last night for a fundraiser event. She attended the annual 'Unframed' benefit auction by Acria, hosted by designer Olivier Theyskens.

Daria rarely makes it out to public functions and when she does they are usually art or sports themed benefits, so its not surprise that she showed up to Unframed.

It's always great to see candids of Daria and all, but I just have a big sartorial bone to pick with this one. I think we all know Daria's the last model to aim for the "best dressed list", and that carefree attitude is what we love about her ... but girl, this is bad. Like gold-sneakers-and-green trucker-hat bad. I'm just going to excuse this outfit and laugh it off because really, her indifference is admirable!

Whatever we've been lacking in editorials and covers lately, we've certainly made up for it in candids. You've got Instagram to thank for that! Although Daria shies away from other social media she does have a public Instagram account (@dotwillow) which you have to check out if you haven't already.

From a model so decidedly private I'm surprised that Daria chose to make her Instagram open for all to see but I'm glad she did because her photos are beautiful. And if not beautiful then they certainly let us into a clearer picture of the Daria outside of magazine pages - one that is a crazy cat lady, that loves to travel to off the map places, and has a teenage worthy crush of Kurt Cobain. Even Modelinia's noticed!

For so much philosophical waxing I've decided I won't post Daria's Instagram photos on this blog. I know it sounds kind of hypocritical to post everything else, but I still feel strange posting Daria's own shots. I will however include pictures of Daria taken by friends, like the ones above by Derek Kettela and Kenny Jossick, and her page is open to follow!

Any great Instagrams out there? Let me know if you have an Instagram, I'd love to see see yours! (Also how awesome are Daria's Celine slippers in the first shot? I wonder if they were a gift from when she shot their spring campaign ...).

I've touched on Daria's tattoo collection in the past but I've never dedicated a post to them. I suppose now is  a good time while were waiting for Daria's editorials in Vogue US and Vogue Spain to come out. Although she doesn't rack up to Freja Beha in count, Daria has seven tattoos that we know of. Depending on the publication or theme, Daria's tattoos are usually retouched out of magazines, but I find that the longer Daria is in this business the more accepting the fashion industry is of her markings. It seems that as Daria ages both her tomboy side and her tattoos become more welcomed.

Daria photographed by Dusan Reljin

Some tattoos are more literal than others, such as the anchors on both hands and the wave on her foot, all symbolizing Daria's love for sailing. Others, like the writing on the back of Daria's neck and the tattoo behind her ear, are yet to be deciphered. It's a nice balance between the obvious and the discrete, and the known and unknown, a play in contrasts that I find defines Daria. Despite her exposed position in the world Daria still remains as elusive as ever.

1. Wave on right foot

2/3. Band on left foot and star on right foot

4. Unknown writing on back of neck

No one's quite sure what this tattoo means as Daria has preffered to keep the meaning of it a secret.

5. Danforth anchor on ring finger

6. Anchor on right hand

Anchor tattoos symbolize the sailor crossing the Atlantic, a feat Daria accomplished in three months in 2008 with her friends and family.

7. Unknown tattoo behind ear

I'm not quite sure what this tattoo is and its quite new so we don't have any confirmation. But it has always looked like a dragon to me, and in regards to sailing tattoos a dragon symbolizes the sailor having crossed the International Date Line.

Great news for fans in Toronto! Looks like Daria will soon be making a stop in the city, this time for a photography exhibit presented by Lancome! Lancome's "Rôses by ..." is an exhibit showcasing the work of 20 different photographers and their takes on the "essence of a rose". The exhibit features works by Patrick Demarchelier, Josh Olins, Brigitte Lacome and Solve Sundsbo (to name a few and mostly artists Daria has worked with) honouring Lancome's official symbol, the rose.

The exhibit has already had it's European run and will now be premiering in North America on June 13th and will run June 14th to 20th at the Luminato Festival in Toronto. Daria will be attending the premiere on the 13th! It looks like the opening night is being reserved for select beauty bloggers participating in their own virtual gallery take on the exhibition. Hopefully they take a lot of pictures though!

If you can't make the the exhibit then you can view all of the artwork below. (Nick Knight's take is my favourite!).

Strangely enough, Luminato is already on my agenda this year (Marina Abramovic! Joni Mitchell!) so it was awesome to hear that I might see Daria as well! If anything the exhibit looks worth a visit. If the opening night is open to the public I'll try my best to pop in, but for now I'm assuming its an invite only event - I'll see what I can do!

New Maiyet + Lancome Campaigns?

Cass shooting for Maiyet, Daria and Cass

Three Maiyet campaigns in a row and it looks like its going on four! This is just some guessing on my part (with the help of some telling photos) but it seems like Daria has landed the Fall 2013 campaign for Maiyet! Cass Bird was seen shooting for the campaign in one of her recent Instagram photos, and Daria was at the shoot as well.

If this is true, then this Maiyet campaign will be Daria's fourth with the brand! She first landed the Spring 2012 campaign and then the next two after.

In other behind the scenes news Lancome posted a photo of Daria trying out the new Lancome by Lanvin pallette. Alber Elbaz, creative director at Lanvin, has collaborated with Lancome in an exclusive collection. No word yet on whether the candid will lead to anything else but I'd love to see his vision translated to a beauty campaign with Daria! Also, a really cute Lancome by Lanvin video, just 'cause.

Celine to the rescue! Daria made her scheduled appearance at the Lancome "Roses By ..." event. She was in Toronto for the opening night of a photo exhibit to be showcased in the Luminato Festival.

There are many things to touch on with this appearance but first ... that rattail. I honestly can't even hate on its reappearance (should it have a name by now?) because Daria so entirely marches to the beat of her own drum. Especially when it comes to her style, and that risk-taking is something I admire. Granted, I don't think we should all follow suit with that hair trend but the Celine suit on the other hand ... she looks amazing in it! Hopefully this outfitting by Celine means Daria will land the Fall 2013 campaign for the brand. I think as she ages and matures she is a perfect fit for their aesthetic. Speaking of campaigns ... stay tuned for an exciting post!

All the photos from the event are below the cut. Thank you so much to posters at bellazon and theFashionSpot forums for all of the pictures collected, and to all of the attendees who took awesome pictures at the event!

Salvatore Ferragamo Fall 2013 Campaign

Good things come to those who wait! Looks like the recent drought in news was paving the way for this recent influx of work - Daria has landed the Fall 2013 Salvatore Ferragamo campaign, photographed by David Sims.

Salvatore Ferragamo Fall 2013 by David Sims

Salvatore Ferragamo is a fine clothing company appealing to the upscale 'masses', and they often stick to the same formula when it comes to ad campaigns. Male and female model, most often lounging around in a modern house with a luxurious setting. We've seen it before in Daria's Fall 2011 Salvatore Ferragamo campaign and also in her work with BOSS Hugo Boss.

Albeit for the repetitive factor of this campaign, it is nice to see Daria play the role of a sophisticated women. She plays the beach bum persona so often that its refreshing to see what she looks like cleaned up and with neat hair. Sometimes even the nicest things come in the plainest packages!

Daria's Vogue Espana cover! There's no denying that Daria's eye is peaking out at us in this preview of the cover. The photo is from the Instagram of Belen Antolin, fashion director at Vogue Espana and the stylist of Daria's recent cover shootwith Patrick Demarchelier. I can't wait to see how it turns out but so far, so good!

This week has really given adage to the old saying "when it rains, it pours". Fresh off of her just released Salvatore Ferragamo campaign, and amidst rumours of a fall Maiyet and Celine campaign, Daria makes an appearance in the Fall 2013 Isabel Marant campaign.

No word on who the photographer is, and only one image has been released so far. I'll post something much more substantial when we get more images but for now enjoy this barrage of news!

Summer Is Here! Vogue Spain July 2013

2013 has been a rough year on the covers front. At this point I would be happy if Daria covered a Sears catalogue but, no fear, as Vogue Spain has come to the rescue! Daria covers the July 2013 issue of Vogue Espana photographed by Patrick Demarchelier.

Vogue Espana July 2013
Daria by Patrick Demarchelier

Daria has two editorials in this issue: "Rompiendo las olas" (Breaking The Waves) by Patrick Demarchelier (15 pages) and "... Y entonces llegó ella" (Along Came Polly) by Patrick Demarchelier (2 pages and an article).

Vogue Spain preview

I'm so excited to see how the editorials turn out but from the cover and preview they both should be very beach inspired. I know I always lament that I'd like to see Daria in other styling and themes, but when the result is so fresh and pretty like this cover then I can't complain.

Breaking The Waves : Vogue Spain July 2013

For such a declarative title Daria's editorial in the July 2013 issue of Spanish Vogue fails to make as much an impact. This editorial marks Daria's fourth of the year (I know, I know, don't even get me started ... ) and her second in Vogue Spain.

Rompiendo las Olas
Ph. Patrick Demarchelier

I feel like anything to be said about these photos has already been said a dozen times over. Daria has done so many of these beach themed editorials that its getting harder and harder to tell them apart. Despite some beautiful shots in this editorial (like the images against the rock ledges [3, 12]) I've seen them all before. On one hand its exciting to see beautiful new photos in this lacking year, but on the other hand its frustrating to see a model as talented as Daria become reduced to a one trick pony. We know she looks good in a bikini and messy hair but we also know she can defy gender roles with Cass Bird and assume different identities with Inez and Vinoodh. So why relegate her to the beach bum once again? Remember back to the days when Daria on the beach caused a riot? Now the theme is as synonymous with Daria as are eyebrows with Cara Delevigne and yoga with Christy Turlington. Sigh.

But, it is true that you don't appreciate something until its gone, and I'm sure that in the future, when we're being bombarded with studio editorials, I'll be yearning for some sand and sun. For what it aims to be this editorial achieves the frivolity and relaxation that is the beach editorial, and for that I applaud Patrick and Vogue Spain. I also think I might be being too picky and should just be happy our girl has a new editorial for us to enjoy! What do you think?

Additional shots:

Daria's second editorial in this issue "... Y Entonces Ilego Ella" is more a focus on Daria separate from the model and is accompanied by an article. Hopefully we'll get scans of this feature soon but for now enjoy the digital grabs. The photos are beautiful but also fall in line with the overwrought idea of quite literally exposing the model to get a peak of their personality. Again, its pretty, but its nothing ground-breaking.

Y Entonces llego ella
Ph. Patrick Demarchelier

Also, no Daria in the July issue of American Vogue. I guess we'll be seeing her Mert & Marcus lensed editorial in the August issue. Considering the wait for this cover one month shouldn't be bad. And if not August, an editorial in the September issue is always welcomed!

Frosted Lips and Indian Trips

We've been bombarded with little news snippets lately so here's a quick rundown of the past week or so:

- The general public is finally starting to take note of Daria's brilliant Instagram account. The Wall Street Journal interviewed Daria about her trip to India a few months back. If you'd like to hear about the meaning behind some of those beautiful photos then I suggest you give it a read, its quite interesting!

- It seems like Daria's editorial in Vogue Spain made a bigger impact than expected - Into The Gloss delves into the "frosted lip" debate. My verdict? Let's leave that trend to Daria.

- A poster on the Fashion Spot forums also gave a brief rundown of Daria's interview in the aforementioned Vogue editorial. Nothing new to report other than the fact that Daria will be sailing the Mediterranean this summer. So expect a lot less work than usual for the later half of this year! :(

- Last but not least ... Happy Canada Day!!

Paris landing! Daria is in Paris for fashion week, and last night she was at the Lancome Show by Alber Elbaz event, celebrating Lanvin's recent collaboration with Lancome.

If there is a fashion god out there then I swear he has answered our sartorial prayers, because Daria looked absolutely brilliant last night. She wore Spring 2013 Lanvin, fitting for the occasion, and a pop of lip colour. I suppose if its an event for Lancome then a little makeup is required! I love that the omnipresent rattail made an appearance - despite such a high profile event (Catherine Deneuve and Ms Carine Roitfeld were present!) Daria held her own.

I wonder if an appearance in Lanvin will lead to something more? The fashion world is a calculated place and something as simple as a wardrobe choice can signal a job prospect. Lanvin's fall campaign is yet to be released and I haven't heard any rumours about who will be fronting the ads ... but then again, this may just be Daria doing her part as a Lancome ambassador, and pledging fealty to both parties. Coincidentally Steven Meisel is Lanvin's go-to photographer and seeing as how D and Meisel haven't worked together in a while I'm not so sure a campaign is carved in stone.

D + G in Ireland = New Work?

That red hair is unmistakeable - Grace and Daria are back together! Daria paid a trip to her home in West Cork, Ireland and this time she brought along some friends. Grace Coddington, creative director of Vogue, was snapped by Daria in all her bright headed glory.

"The one and only!" - instagram.com/dotwillow

Hopefully this means a Vogue US editorial in the works, and one that takes full advantage of the beauty of Ireland. If there is to be an editorial out of this visit then I'm hoping for one that showcases Daria at home playing the role of an urban castaway. It looks like these pictures were taken a few days before Daria's appearance at the Lancome event in Paris. Stella Greenspan, one of Grace's assistants, also snapped some photos on location which you can see below. All things point to some new work but if this just turns out to be a meeting between friends then at least we've gotten some pretty candids out of it!
