Cover Star : Vogue Paris August 2013

UPDATE A few preview pictures of the editorial have been posted here. I will update with a full post and comments as soon as scans are out!

For her fourth cover of the year Daria appears on the August issue of Vogue Paris, photographed by David Sims, wearing Ralph Lauren, fronting the London issue ... a little all over the place, I know, but we'll dissect that all in a bit.

Vogue Paris August 2013 : Daria by David Sims

I think August is quickly becoming my favourite month. The cover of the August issue of Vogue Paris has become somewhat of a tradition for Daria, and this is her third time on this months issue (August 2008 and August 2009 being her last two). And her eighth VP cover overall!

General consensus on the internet is that this cover is a flop, from the transatlantic styling (an American designer for a London issue?), the text overload, and even Daria's nose ring! I can agree with a few of those qualms but I have to come to the defence of this cover ... or at least try to understand such an underwhelming effort.

After being subjected to the text placement travesty that was American Vogue circa 2007 (*deep sigh*) I can't find too much of a fault with the art direction here. A lot of text, yes, but overwhelming, no. I've heard of a few comparisons of this cover to old Esquire magazine covers. Now, if that magazine had some British roots it might have been an ingenious reference. But alas, both American owned and run, so that aspect fails. The jacket, by Ralph Lauren - a symbol of the influence of London outside of London? Or just a monthly quota to fill for American advertisers? As for the nose ring, I like it! Its another testament to the status of Daria in the industry, when taboos like piercings and tattoos, normally airbrushed out of existence, are allowed to remain in the picture. Its not just another model on this cover, its Daria

I don't know if these are so much as redeeming factors than justifications for a subpar cover. London + punk + Daria should have produced something much more striking. And wasn't Anglomania like seven years ago?! But we still have the entire inside of the issue to convince us and if theres another 70+ page editorial inside then I'm sure we'll get a few great shots out of it.

In other cover related news, Freja Beha is on the August issue of Vogue UK. Although I've yet to see two of my favourite models work together, at least they'll be in good company at the new stands. And both sporting big grins nonetheless!

My thoughts on this editorial are about as deep as its actual length. What a disappointment that Daria only gets five pages in the August issue of Vogue Paris. If Alt doesn't bother to put any effort into the magazine then I too can leave it at that.

The start of this month has been quite busy and it seems like July is the time to make up for the lack of work this year. I posted a preview of Daria's fall 2013 campaign for Isabel Marant a while back and now we have the full campaign! I love this first image here and its great to see Daria continuing her streak with the brand.

Another Isabel Marant campaign is not all that surprising but this Fall 2013 ad for Diane Von Furstenberg is right out of left field! The campaign is photographed by Sebastian Faena and there are eleven images in total. I love what I see so far so I can only hope the other images are this good.

Vogue UK September 2013 Cover

After a ridiculously quiet start to the year Daria is finally putting out the kind of work that we're used to. She's landed the cover of the September 2013 issue of Vogue UK. This is Daria's fourth Vogue UK cover, her last being four years ago.

Vogue UK September 2013
Daria Werbowy by Patrick Demarchelier

Daria looks really cool on the cover, almost as if she stepped off the street, stood in front of Patrick Demarchelier's camera and in one shot the cover was borne. Its not so much the model on the cover as it is Daria on the cover.

I also think the relaxed styling on this cover is its own undoing. I gave a little squeal when I learned Daria would be on the cover, but already expected something laid back and relaxed before I saw the image. And laid back and relaxed is what I got. Daria in this kind of set up seems almost formulaic by now and although I love to see her with more work, especially covers, it can tend to be quite boring. The preview below does look much more promising though ... Daria will have 7 photos in this issue, and if I read correctly an article as well!

Vogue UK September 2013 preview

Now, if I had my way Daria would be on the cover of every Vogue, the American version included. And although the latter doesn't seem that possible, more than one Vogue cover this month doesn't seem that implausible. Some keen eyes on the Fashion Spot forums have given regard to these two shots from Mert Alas' Instagram. Both are regarding the behind the scenes production of an unknown project but from the casting (Naomi, Natasha, Kate) and styling it seems very Vogue Paris. I'm guessing there will be a multiple solo-girl covers. How epic would it be to have another Vogue Paris cover following her August one, and two Vogue covers in the same month!? I'll keep you posted!

Vogue UK September 2013 : Rebel Rebel

It's my favourite time of the year, not just because it happens to be my birthday, but because the September issues have started rolling out! We're on the cusp of a new season and luckily for us Daria is dominating the magazines this month. Starting with an editorial in the September issue of Vogue UK.

Rebel Rebel
Vogue UK September 2013
Daria by Patrick Demarchelier

Fitting that a David Bowie song is used for this editorial title, seeing as how Daria is a big fan of the Englishman's music. And, like the musician, she herself has carved out a singular path in her respective industry. Vogue UK has also been one to 'rebel' against the formula of the magazine industry. This year seven out of their nine covers were models, practically unheard of in this time of Hollywood starlet overdrive. What better than a combination of Daria and Vogue UK for the September issue - a model who rebels against the norm in a magazine choosing to do the.

The styling in this shoot is brilliant as are Demarchelier's portraits of Daria. Despite being a veteran in this industry Daria still surprises me with her modeling skills and nuances. She elevates a studio editorial to something much more intimate, a collection of portraits that convey her nomadic personality. They're a beautiful accompaniment to the article inside, which you have to read if you're a fan, and even more so if you're not. There are some new things to learn, of Daria's life in Ireland and of a fairy-tale romance with a carpenter, but its also a great insight to a woman who has grown up in an industry that both inspires her, and leads her to take month-long sailing trips away from her work. She is entirely "the reluctant supermodel".

I guess this photo all but confirms Daria's editorial in the September issue of Vogue. I don't remember such anticipation for an editorial - ever since we saw those candids in Venice in April its been a long five month wait!

As for which model makes the most appearances in the September issue ... I'll have to go with Daria. On the campaign front she has Celine, Diane Von Furstenberg, Salvatore Ferragamo, Isabel Marant, Lancôme, and Maiyet ... deep breath. If she doesn't have the other girls beat in editorials then she certainly does in ads!

Speaking of DVF, the campaign video for the fall campaign has just been released. And how gorgeous is it? If the Celine ads launched a bob phenomena then I think this campaign will do something for the seventies disco ringlets. I'll hold off on posting the actual campaign until we get all of the images but for now enjoy this video!

In case you haven't forgotten (amidst all of the editorial excitement) a few months ago Daria landed her first fall campaign for Salvatore Ferragamo. To tide you off until the September issues are released, here is a behind the scenes video of the campaign shoot in London.

This is Daria's third time working for the label (Spring 2011, Fall 2011). I've also added the entire campaign under the Ad Campaigns page so make sure to check it out as there are some new shots!

Bad news - there's no Mert and Marcus editorial in the September issue of Vogue ... but will an Annie Leibovitz editorial make up for it? Daria and Adam Driver, star of HBO's "Girls", are photographed for a fashion story in County Kerry, Ireland.

Wild Irish Rose
Vogue US September 2013
Daria Werbowy and Adam Driver by Annie Leibovitz

I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say everyone was expecting those Mert and Marcus candids from Venice to finally come to fruition in this issue. After all, they were shot way back in April and if my industry timing is correct then they should have been in print by now. There's also the possibility that the entire editorial could have been scrapped. It's happened before (Raquel Zimmermann's editorial in the September 2007 issue of Vogue) and with the magazine's mammoth budget its not entirely impossible. Although it would be such a shame considering how beautiful the candids were ... I still have hopes for the October issue though!

On to the editorial we actually get to see! Annie Leibovitz takes us to the rugged terrains of Ireland with the unexpected coupling of Daria and Adam Driver. I think this editorial might be the result of those candids of Grace in Ireland. I'm a sucker for the Vogue 'couple editorial' and a photoshoot in Ireland has always been on my wishlist for Daria. I'm sure these will look even more beautiful in print as most of Leibovitz's work does.

I don't have too much to say other than I really do love this shoot and the fact that Daria is shown in minimal makeup, true to her 29 years. That Vogue is still loyal to models reaching their thirties, and presents them in their actual light, is refreshing in such an ephemeral industry.

The Lost Interview

Stranger things have happened on this site but I think this post is one of the more stranger ones ... I'm not quite sure what I'm showing you guys but I can do a little guesswork as to where these photos are from. A random Google search led me to these unseen pictures and interview. It looks like a Hello! magazine article, probably from the UK edition, and being that Daria is 24 in this article this goes way back to 2006-07. I can't get the exact date on the issue though and any information on the photographer is scant, so I'm not sure when the photos are taken.

Aside from the recent article in Vogue UK this is one of Daria's most forthcoming interviews to date, so I'm really surprised its taken this long to pop up! She talks about working on the Fall 2006 Chanel campaign, touches on Josh Hartnett, her fear of snakes and most interestingly ...

There's been a lot of Irish in this blog recently hasn't there!? It's just a happy coincidence that I found the interview at this time. I had a laugh knowing Daria would go on to find herself an Irish carpenter to shack up with, six years down the road!

Just going to leave this here ... and have a momentary freak-out as I collect my thoughts.

Update In case you haven't already figured it out, Daria, along with six other top models, is on the cover of the September issue of Interview magazine photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.

Interview Magazine September 2013 by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott

For their fall issue the team at Interview enlisted Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott to photograph 100 top tier models including Daria, Amber Valetta, Linda Evangelista, Kate Moss, Stephanie Seymour, Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington. To name just a few. Now I say top models because a cover series like this is bound to bring up the old supermodel debate - I'll repeat the same thing I said over at tFS forums.

There's been some hesitation about Daria's cover among all of the older "supers". What I don't think people realize is that the decision of who makes the cover isn't so much a measure of a model's "supermodel" status as it is an indication of who has their contracts locked up tight. You can't shoot Naomi without giving her a cover, you can't shoot Kate without giving her a cover ... and now Daria has reached the point in her career where an appearance in a magazine requires a cover as well.

I'm so glad that she was included in this series, and the fact that she made it onto the cover of Interview is such a great accomplishment. To be in the company of cover stars like Grace Jones and Mick Jagger is great for any model, "super" or not.

You can read Daria's interview here. And the six other covers:

September seems to be a good month for Daria - she lands her third cover of the month with the premier issue of Harper's Bazaar Germany. In true Harper'z Bazaar fashion the cover is the iconic white backdrop with a playful take on the masthead. No word yet on the photographer but perhaps it is Karl Lagerfeld, as Carine and himself seem to play an important role in the launch of this issue.

Harper's Bazaar Germany September 2013

It seems like the inaugural issue has become Daria's domain. She landed the cover of the first issue of Vogue Ukraine (March 2013) and is now gracing the cover of Bazaar's latest European counterpart. Does anyone know of any other magazines launching this year? Maybe Daria can make it a hat trick! I haven't seen news of the content yet but hopefully an editorial will come along with the cover.

The magazine has already started rolling out in Germany and hopefully it'll make its way to Toronto. If I can't get my hands on this are there any readers who would be able to get a hold of the copy for me? I would be really grateful!

FASHION Magazine October 2013

Cover overload! Sorry to be repetitive but here is another cover to share with you guys. This time its for Fashion Magazine's October 2013 issue. Fashion is a Canadian magazine that has championed Daria from the beginning and this is her ninth appearance on the cover!

Fashion October 2013 Daria by Chris Nicholls

I guess this is good news for those of us who can't get our hands on the German issue of Harper's Bazaar.  I'm personally not the biggest fan of this magazine (case in point, this cover ...) but every time Daria makes an appearance I pick up an issue. There are usually only one or two photos in the feature so I'm hoping they publish more this time around.

I don't know if its that I've become lax to fashion but I've been a fan of mostly everything Daria has put out lately. Granted, this cover doesn't go along with the more natural persona that Daria has been projecting as of late but there's something about a cover so obviously fashion, for lack of a better word, that I love. Sometimes you just need chandelier earrings and a blow out on a cover. But then again maybe this is just the heat wave in town talking.

There's a sneak peek of the interview over at Fashion's website. I'll post the content up ASAP!

Behind the Scenes with ET Canada

Apart from Linda Evangelista, Daria is Canada's most famous modelling export. So when she lands the cover of a local magazine, its big news. Which I love because it means interviews on interviews, and usually a segment on a cheesy news show. As such, ET Canada filmed a behind the scenes look of the Fashion cover story:

It seems that this editorial was shot around the same time that Daria was in town for the Lancome "Roses by ..." exhibit. I'm excited to see how the biker theme translates onto print - you can never really go wrong with models and bikes can you?

Fashion usually hits newsstands at the beginning of the month so I'll try to get this scanned if scans don't already start popping up!

I'm sure most Daria fans know by now that in terms of work when it rains, it really pours. That's why I've got two editorials to share with you in this post, spanning across both sides of the Atlantic. The first is a beauty editorial from newly launched Harper's Bazaar Germany and the second a return to Canadian Fashion.

Bazaar Beauty Talk
Harper's Bazaar Germany September 2013
Daria Werbowy by Mark Abrahams

The Harper's Bazaar editorial is a beauty shoot, which makes sense on a business basis. Daria is the face of Lancôme and these kind of features are in order. Personally I've never been a fan of them save for the odd shoot. I would have loved to see the direction HB Germany would have taken with an editorial shoot. There are some beautiful images here but I feel like I've seen it before.

Tough Times

This Fashion editorial is much more my taste. Its also a refreshing contrast to the more low maintenance approach Daria has taken in her editorials. Her Vogue UK feature confirmed that Daria is now her own manager than ever but its nice to see her change gears and dress up in a biker/post-punk/grunge mashup ... is that what you would call it? Either way how amazing is that first picture? Daria makes a good Charlotte Rampling?

How could someone let this happen to you?! Girl, no. Let's just move on from this and pretend like it never happened. And can Conde Nast collectively agree on retiring the mullet for their covers? I think two appearances in one month is more than enough.

So Daria walked in Balenciaga and I'm just like ... no but seriously how awesome is this! Daria made a surprise appearance at Paris fashion week and closed the Balenciaga show.

Daria rarely does runway appearances these days so it's such a nice surprise to see her on the runway! Even if the show in question was designed by Wang (RIP fashion). I wonder if this means a campaign in the future? Daria has never worked with Balenciaga on the ad front so it'd be great to see what direction they would take. What I do know is that a runway appearance makes for a bunch of new pictures. I'm loving Daria's shorter and blonder hair in the candids below. I'll be updating this post with any new pictures that come along!

On the news front Daria is in Ibiza shooting an editorial with Alex White and Charlotte Tilbury. My best guess is for W Magazine. You can also see Daria's most recent editorial in Vogue Russia on the Editorials page. Also check out this super cute post by a reader - she took Daria'sVogue UK cover on an art gallery road trip!

Oop - it's been a while! Sadly I've been too busy to update ... but not so sadly, it seems Daria has been pretty busy too! Here's a rundown on what's been happening in the past few months:

As predicted Daria landed the Fall 2013 Maiyet campaign, photographed by Cass Bird ...

she also showed up in the behind the scenes video for the campaign (thanks for the upload Megan!) ...

Maiyet wasn't her only campaign as she was one of many faces for the Isabel Marant for H&M line. No surprise there considering Daria has been the Marant campaign girl multiple times in the past ...

Behind the scenes:

And it seems like France has been having something of a love affair with Daria as of late as she's appeared in not one but four French magazines in the past three months!

First in the November 2013 issue of Marie Claire ...

Things To Look Forward To

Daria has really been churning out the work as of late. But if these candids and Instagrams are any indication, then 2014 should be just as busy as the end of 2013 was. Here are some things to look forward to:

Daria worked with makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury, hair stylist Christiaan and wardrobe stylist Kate White. White often works with W magazine, and this was from a shoot with Mert and Marcus, so my best guess is on a W magazine editorial for the new year.

In perhaps the most interesting of previews Daria worked with Mert and Marcus for a Vogue UK story styled by none other than Kate Moss! If you haven't heard Mossie joined the Vogue UK team as a Contributing Fashion Editor. I'm sensing a March cover in Daria's foreseeable future ...

Daria is seen here with Yann Weber who works with both L'Express Styles and Antidote magazine. Daria just had a recent editorial in L'Express but this candid below is from a shoot for Antidote. It's an amazing publication so I'm so excited to see how this will turn out.

Daria and Andrea Tremolada of Salvatore Ferragamo so expect another Ferragamo campaign for Spring 2013! Hmm Marant, DVF and Celine, take note!

A very zen Daria on set with stylist Alastair McKimm. I'm not too familiar with his work but I do know that Alastair mostly works with i-D magazine and The Last Magazine ... but it could really be for anything. Have I also ever mentioned how much I love saying the name Alastair? ... Alastair.

There's been a bit of a shuffle over at Mango with Daria replacing Miranda Kerr as the face of the brand. She shot with Josh Olins in a desert somewhere. Honestly I've seen enough desert editorials to last me a life and a half but regardless I can't wait to see how these turn out.

Daria also worked with Alexi Lubormiski for a Lancome advertisement. I think the Instagram below right is from this shoot because the hairstyle does look quite similar. I'm hoping for a bunch of new Lancome ads because it has been quite a while!

Behind the scenes with Alexi Lubormiski, newest Lancome image (source)

So thats an editorial in W Magazine, a potential cover and editorial in Vogue UK, work in Antidote, the new Salvatore Ferragamo campaign, Mango Spring 2013, an editorial with Alastair McKimm and a return to Lancome. Phew ... did I miss anything?

I love that the older Daria gets, the more reign she has in the work she produces. Like this sailing themed editorial from L'Equipe Sport & Style. Its no secret that one of Daria's loves in life is sailing and this relationship is portrayed beautifully in this editorial.

Daria was photographed by Mathieu Cesar for the December issue of L'Equipe Sport & Style, in a series of black and white shots taken in Seychelles. Water Girl is seriously so beautiful and its interesting to see another take of Daria doing what she loves most. Plus, anything involving a turtle is pretty awesome by my standards (check out the third image below!).

There is an interview in French as well, and if anyone would like I can translate this, just let me know in the comments!
